Bayer has agreed to sell its Liberty herbicide and LibertyLink-branded seed businesses in order to win antitrust approval for its acquisition of Monsanto.

The divestiture request came from South Africa’s Competition Commission. While South Africa is a relatively small market for Bayer and Monsanto, the move marks the first time Bayer has publicly acknowledged it will have to sell its Liberty line, which competes with Monsanto’s Roundup and Roundup Ready seeds.

Anti-trust regulators in larger markets, such as the United States and the European Union, are expected to make similar divestiture requests.
