The American Farm Bureau says delays to confirm Sonny Perdue as Secretary of Agriculture could put U.S. ag at risk. Director of Public Policy Dale Moore says there are so many issues impacting ag today.
“Obviously we’ve had some success in rolling back Waters of the U.S. but we’ve got a number of issues on the trade front, on the domestic farm policy front, on farm programs themselves and hopefully other things that are going on. Hopefully before too many more days go by we’ll have a new Secretary of Agriculture” says Perdue.
Extensive research and an FBI background check are required before nomination hearings, and Perdue was selected the day before President Trump’s nomination. Moore tells Brownfield because of delays in the confirmation process, Perdue will need to hit the ground running.
“One of the things we know from talking to our Farm Bureau members down in Georgia and talking to some other folks, he’s going to hit the ground running. Whatever challenges we think he may be facing I have a feeling it’s going to look pretty flawless once he gets the ability to sit in the chair and take charge” says Perdue.
Acting Agriculture Deputy Secretary Mike Young is in charge of USDA while Perdue’s nomination is pending.
