Huge strides were made in sugarbeet planting this past week as nearly all beet producing states have 50 percent or more planted with some states nearly or all completed.
The weekly planting report from the most recent USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report (dated May 14 and May 15 and for the week ending May 13) shows sugarbeet planting progress.
Going west to east across the United States here’s what the report states:
Washington – No report was given.
Oregon - The sugarbeet crop is now in with 99 percent of the beets emerged in the state. That’s up from 78 percent a week ago.
California – Growers in California plant in the fall and harvest the following year. Growers there planted 18,000 acres last fall.
Idaho - The state’s sugarbeet growers done planting the 2023 crop as the NASS shows 51 percent of the beets have emerged. The five-year average for this time of year is 59 percent.
Wyoming - Wyoming growers made impressive gains again this past week. The NASS reports 72 percent of the beet crop is now planted, compared to 55 percent the week prior. A year ago at this time 84 percent had been planted. The five-year average for this time of year is 83 percent.
Montana - Growers in Montana doubled the percentage of beets planted compared to the previous week. 14 percent of the sugarbeet crop has been planted in the state, whereas 7 percent was planted last week. A year ago that percentage was 18 percent while the five-year average is 59 percent.
Colorado – Colorado growers made huge gains their planting with 51 percent of the sugarbeet crop now in, up from 30 percent the week before. A year ago, 68 percent of the beet crop was in. The five-year average is 79 percent.
Nebraska – No report was given.
North Dakota – According to the NASS, North Dakota growers made significant gains this past week. 60 percent of the crop has been planted, compared to 1 percent the week before. At this point a year ago, 8 percent of the crop had been planted. The five-year average is 64 percent.
Minnesota – Minnesota has made some huge gains this past week as reports show 75 percent of the beets have been planted as of the report. That’s up from 23 percent a week ago. A year ago at this time that number was 8 percent. The five-year average is 62 percent.
Michigan – The beet crop is nearly all in in Michigan with 95 percent of the beet crop planted, up from 85 percent a week ago. A year ago, 86 percent of the crop was in while the five-year average is 84 percent.
