Moorhead, MN – American Crystal Sugar Company employees were presented three awards during the North Dakota Safety Council’s Annual Safety and Health Awards Banquet in Bismarck, ND.

The Emerging Safety Champion Award is given to safety professionals who have been on the job for less than five years but have shown a deep commitment to safety culture within their organization. This year's winner is Janinne Juve, who has demonstrated remarkable dedication to safety in her short tenure with the company’s factory in Moorhead, MN. Juve is recognized as a safety champion as well as a valuable resource to the safety team by her colleagues.

The Lifesaver Award is awarded to individuals who have acted heroically to assist and rescue others in the workplace or elsewhere. This year's winners are Leighton Sys and Cyrus Mueller from the East Grand Forks, MN, factory. Sys and Mueller demonstrated bravery and selflessness when assisting a person displaying a need for immediate care on a minus 43 degrees F winter night. Their quick thinking and actions saved the life of this person and prevented a potentially catastrophic incident.

Finally, the American Crystal Sugar occupational health nurses were presented the Outstanding Safety Instructor Award. The team of Janinne Juve (Moorhead factory), Kayla Thompson (Drayton factory, ND), Dan Kennedy (Moorhead offices), Sherrlene Watne (Crookston factory, MN), and Amy Fite (Hillsboro factory, ND) have conducted more than 15 CPR and first aid classes for more than 100 students. Their dedication to safety has helped educate and train hundreds of students, reducing factory incidents and improving safety culture throughout the organization.

“We are so very proud to recognize these exceptional efforts,” said Lisa Borgen, vice president of administration at American Crystal. “These folks have gone above and beyond to ensure safety in the workplace and have demonstrated great leadership at our factories.”

American Crystal Sugar Company congratulates these employees for their outstanding achievements and their commitment to safety. Borgen added, “Their contributions are an inspiration to us all, and we are proud to have them as members of our team.”
