An ag economist says the administration has indicated it is rethinking how it plans to pursue renegotiating trade deals.
Ohio State University professor emeritus Carl Zulauf says President Trump’s trade rhetoric has many in the agriculture on edge.
He says now is the time for the ag industry to voice its concerns.
“Putting input in at the present time could really help shape—or even use the word reshape those attitudes,” he says. “With respect to individual commodities and respect to overall US agricultural trade.”
Zulauf says agriculture is one of the most trade dependent sectors in the U.S. economy.
Earlier this week Vice President Mike Pence said the U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement could be the next FTA to be reviewed. The trade deficit in goods with South Korea has increase $11 billion in the last 4 years.
South Korea ranks sixth among U.S. ag export markets.
